January 12, 2010 - After an exciting summer that included playing in the final of the 3D Western Canada Invitational, the True Players Showcase in Seattle, and a team trip to the Bahamas, the boys are back playing for their high school teams. This past weekend was a great weekend for many of the 3D U17 athletes. At the Terry Fox Legal Beagle Tournament in Port Coquitlam the #5 ranked Burnaby South Rebels had their best weekend of the year. READ MORE Burnaby South has four members of last year’s 3D u-17 team including Ater Degal, Lazar Cuk, Jok Malek, and Daniel Edwards. The #7 ranked Rebels upset #1 ranked White Rock Christian in the quarter finals with a 70-69 overtime victory. Lazar Cuk was named player of the game after a 17 point effort. This propelled the Rebels into the tournament final where they came up short against #2 ranked Yale Lions. Unfortunately Burnaby South lost in the final 91-63. Jok Malek was named to the tournament 1st all-star team and Ater Degal was named Top Defensive Player. At the St. Thomas More Chancellor Tournament in Burnaby the #12 ranked Kitsilano Blue Demons got easy wins against Charles Best and Tamanawis before an epic semi final overtime win against 3D U17 members Wes Dekleer and Nik Ottenbreit. Kitsilano was led by a 35 point effort from 3D Elite member Edvin Malushaga. Malushaga, who is the #3 scorer in the Vancouver league with a 19.5 points per game average, kept up his excellent play as Kits went on to 82-70 finals win over Fleetwood Park. Edvin Malushaga was named a 1st team all-star. Also, participating in the tournament was John Leong from Handsworth who finished the tournament 2-2. At the Winston Churchill Bulldog Classic in Vancouver, Fedor Mikhailytchev led Seycove to a 3rd place finish and was rewarded with a 1st team all-star. Fedor is the only grade 12 from last year’s 3D u-17 Elite team and he is quietly showing why he is one of the top grade 12s in the province. Fedor is currently averaging 29.5 points per game as he looks to lead Seycove to the AA Provincial Championships in March. Other 3D players in action this past weekend included Oliver Schmidt whose West Vancouver team finished 10th in the St. Michael’s Tournament in Victoria. Unfortunately Oliver suffered a knee injury and was unable to get a lot of playing time. Also, Cain Ruttenberg from Carson Graham participated in the BRIT Tournament in Saskatoon which is considered one of Western Canada’s top Tournaments. |
